Merzouga

Merzouga is on the south east edge of Morocco, almost due east from Marrakech, accessible by picturesque routes from either Fez (about 7 hrs) or Skoura/Ouarzazate (about 6 hrs).

Merzouga Dunes

The main draw to Merzouga are the Erg Chebbi, the most accessible large (160 metre high) sand dunes in the country, only 60-90 minutes on camel back from the village. After a night’s camp in the desert you can return to the kasbah hotel on the edge of the dunes for a shower.

The largest dunes, rising to twice the height are a long day’s journey to the south west of here and a long way off the beaten track.

Occasional sandstorms can bring travel to a halt. In autumn, at the time of date harvest, flies can be a problem. Behave sensibly to avoid sunstroke – the only well-equipped hospital in the desert is in Ouarzazate.
