Tafraoute

Tafraoute, a small town in a breathtaking setting of the boulder strewn pink hued mountains of the Anti Atlas, is accessed by winding, scenic mountain roads from the Atlantic coast or from Taroudant and Agadir to the north. The town is 143 km south-west of Agadir, a trip of some 3 hours.

The area is predominantly inhabited by women and children for most of the year because poverty has driven the men to emigrate to large cities or abroad; this has resulted in the construction of some incongruously grand houses and a very peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.

The town comes alive on Tuesdays when the main souk takes place, and in late February or early March when the almond harvest is celebrated with singing and dancing, which is in stark contrast to the peace of the rest of the year.
