dar infiane – KASBAH AND DESERT CAMP | tata

Set on a hill top offering fine views, this tastefully restored and ecologically managed kasbah of great character offers a warm welcome, comfortable rooms and a small pool in a fascinating yet little visited area on the northern edge of the Sahara. The owner also runs a luxury desert camp nearby at Tissint.

Accommodation: At the kasbah there are 9 bedrooms, all colourfully furnished in ethnic style and with air conditioning/heating units: 3 twin, 4 doubles and 2 suites; 5 of the rooms including the 2 suites may take one or two extra beds.  Note that some rooms have the original low doors and most people will therefore have to bend to pass through them.

Their luxury desert camp of 16 Bedouin tents is about an hour’s drive away at Tissint, famed for the nearby spring-fed pools. High quality toilet facilities include showers that are powered by reliable solar energy and European style toilets. The traditional wool tents have proper beds with comfy mattresses and rugs on the floor.

Both the kasbah sleeps a maximum of 24; the luxury camp sleeps up to 32.

Location: On the outskirts of the town of Tata, the kasbah enjoys fine views of the palmery. Tata lies on the southern edge of the Anti Atlas Mountains where they meet the Sahara. It is accessible by two picturesque routes through the mountains from Taroudant (about 3.5 hours’ drive). The desert camp is under an hour’s drive east of Tata near Tissint.

Services and other points to note: The properties have an impressive “Green Key” certified sustainability policy. At the camp there are 2 camels for riding if desired. Options include excursions to a number of fascinating places nearby including caves, beautiful springs, Neolithic rock engravings (there are 114 sites in the region), impressive rock formations, some of which yield the most beautiful fossils, a “water clock” and ancient underground irrigation channels known as khettaras. Market days in Tata are Friday and Sunday.

Meals: Half board is included. Lunch and picnics are available on request.

Staff: The French owner, Patrick, Francine, Sylian and Latifa, the manageress, offer a very warm welcome. Patrick has fulfilled his dream here by creating a responsibly- managed guest house in the desert.
